HANDLING & MAINTAINING CANVAS PRINTS
Canvas art prints are more durable than works on paper, but they are still susceptible to sagging, fading, and moisture damage. Proper handling and environmental control are the most effective ways to ensure they last for decades.
1. Safe Handling
• Clean hands: Always wash and dry your hands before touching the print to avoid transferring skin oils or dirt.
• Two-hand grip: Use both hands to carry the print by the sides of the frame or stretcher bars. Never press on the front surface, as this can cause permanent dents or sagging.
• Avoid leaning objects: Do not lean items against the front or back of the canvas, which can lead to stretching or puncturing the material.
• If only a print is bought, do not keep the print in the tube for long. Take it out of the tube and put it on a stretcher as early as possible.
2. Maintenance & Cleaning
• Dry dusting: Regularly use a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a broad, flat brush with soft bristles (like a clean makeup brush) to remove dust.
• Gentle spot cleaning: For stubborn marks, use a slightly damp cloth with distilled water. If necessary, add a tiny drop of very mild dish soap, but always test a small corner first to ensure no ink lifts.
• What to avoid: Never use harsh chemicals (ammonia, bleach), paper towels, or abrasive brushes, as they can scratch the surface or damage protective coatings.
3. Ideal Environment
• Light control: Hang art away from direct sunlight. UV rays are the primary cause of color fading over time.
• Stable climate: Maintain a consistent temperature between 18°C and 24°C and relative humidity between 40% and 60%.
• Avoid “wet” rooms: Do not hang canvas prints in bathrooms or kitchens, where high humidity and temperature spikes can cause warping, Mold growth, or sagging.
• Heat sources: Keep prints away from radiators, fireplaces, or air conditioning vents to prevent the canvas from drying out or cracking.
4. Storage & Moving
• Store vertically: Always keep canvases upright like books on a shelf. Stacking them flat can lead to pressure marks or sagging.
• Protective wrapping: Use acid-free paper or glassine to wrap each piece.
• Elevate off the floor: Store art on racks or wooden blocks to prevent damage from potential spills, pests, or cold/damp floors.
